PERCCI’s Mentorship programme rewards two mentees

April 2008 Infocom

The PERCCI boardroom was full as the Mentorship Programme brought together the mentors, mentees and sponsors for a very special occasion.

Two small businesses were rewarded for their commitment to the Programme at the graduation ceremony with a difference. Instead of being capped and gowned, Lalita Go-Ahead Enterprises and Jill Cawse & Associates received a computer and internet connectivity starter pack sponsored by Vodacom.

Sindiso Mhlahlo from Vodacom, in handing over the computers to the graduates, promised the necessary training in order that the users could derive the most benefit from their reward.

PERCCI purchased the necessary licensing software and Bennetts Technologies had quickly offered to undertake the installation free of charge.

Mike Smith initiated the programme shortly after his retirement with the idea of encouraging other retirees to join as mentors and together, by utilising their vast experience in a proactive manner, give something useful back to the business community. Each mentor is evaluated in terms of their ability and experience and once a mentee is matched with a mentor, they meet for two hours every week to discuss strategies and solutions to problems. The goal is for the mentee to solve the problems and bring ideas to the table on their own, with only guidance from the mentor.

A Survival Toolkit covering various important aspects of business had been put together for the use of the mentors. Various companies had sponsored certain costs involved in bringing this kit to fruition and these include Standard Bank, KPMG, Alexander Forbes and Joubert Galpin Searle Attorneys.

“We believe that many of the problems faced by SME’s can be avoided through sound planning and advice from someone who has walked the same road,” said Smith. Through support and encouragement, the mentors can empower the mentees to think the way forward and teach them how to make important decisions based on past experiences and future plans.
